Transition, is the process of letting go of the way things used to be and then taking hold of the way they subsequently become. In between the letting go and the taking hold again, there is a chaotic but potentially creative “neutral zone” when things aren’t the old way, but aren’t really a new way yet either. This three-phase process-ending, neutral zone, beginning again-is transition. Transition is the way that we all come to terms with change. Without transition, a change is mechanical, superficial, empty.

Are you someone who wants — even needs — to be right most of the time? All of the time? Do you like to have the last word in a disagreement? Do you get frustrated when others don’t agree with your opinions? I do, much more often than I’d like. And it never feels good.
There is just the right moment for everything
“There is just the right moment for everything. If you find obstruction on your path, back off just a minute. Take time to allow for an integration of this new information. Your being wants to create perfection, but perfection cannot be forced. If things are not working out well, take a break, especially a mental break. Let go of how you were looking at the situation. Allow the superconscious to do its tempering work of synthesis.”

These are the five real and measurable costs of not managing transition effectively. Remember them the next time people tell you there isn’t time to worry about the reactions of your employees to the latest plan for change. And help such people to see that not managing transition is really a shortcut that costs much more than it saves. For it leaves behind an exhausted and demoralized workforce at the very time when everyone agrees that the only way to be successful is to get more effort and more creativity out of the organization’s employees……
