Do you ever put your ideas into words?

I get annoyed with middle- and lower-level people who complain that top management is a bunch of idiots who don’t see the future and don’t think long-term. I say to them: “Do you ever put your ideas into words? Have you ever written a manifesto or bothered to convene a group across the company to come talk about this? Have you gone to reasonable lengths to be heard?” The answer is, “Well, no.” In a weird kind of way, Dilbert has made it acceptable to be whiner. My hope is that making explicit some of the rules of activism will increase the number of people who can become successful activists. If the number increases it from 0.001 percent to 2 percent of the people in an organization, that would be a huge increase. But the reality is that there are still relatively few people who have the guts and the passion and the perseverance to do it. There are not that many Martin Luther Kings or Ghandis in the world. Certainly, I would like to give some comfort and some courage to people who are almost but not quite there.
